  4. regarding point 4. Can I use an XI R2 BIAR file to upgrade to XI 3.x?

I created a BIAR files with IW R2 and was able to import it with IW XI3.1.

    • Hi lucky_me,

You cant use BIAR to upgrade, you have to do CMS to CMS. Are you sure about that? What SP are you on?

      • Hi Shahfaisal,

yes, I’m sure. We are on XI R2 SP3 and are testing some ways to upgrade to XI3.1 SP2 FP2.2.

It is indeed not possible to create BIAR files on R2 with the IW from XI3.

But understand me right: I did the export from R2 into BIAR with IW/R2 and the import from BIAR into XI3 with IW/XI3.1.
By now I cannot recommend this method, because I faced some issues with missing folder rights and so on.

It is difficult to evaluate if an issue comes from the import or rises due to the security changes in XI3.

  5. Agree, BIAR is not meant for promotion/deployment or for upgrade. Use it to backup/archive objects(reports/universes etc). It’s definitely handy but sometimes not reliable. Just be careful with it.

  6. Hi Shahfaisal,

We are converting BO XI R2 Deski report into BO XI3.1 SP2 Webi Report. Couple of our report is based upon external data providers(XL sheet).
    Those reports are not conveting.

Any suggestion on this will be appreciated.

    • Hi Apurv,

What is the error you get? I was able to convert several reports with Excel data provider without any issues.

  7. hi,
this page for me have been amazing, because I am in a migration from 6.5 to XI 3.1. I have a question about it, when you do the migration with import wizard, first you have to have installed XI 3.1. I was thinking that you could export the .BIAR file with Import Wizard connected to 6.5 and the next step could be import to XI 3.1.
I tell you that because I tried the migration. In the source I put the BusinessObjects Enterprise 6.x and in the destination environment the wizard asked me only for a BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1.

  10. Hello Shahfaisal Muhammed ,

I am really glad that i found this blog. I am new to MIGRATION and i have to migrate BO 6.5 SP 4 to BO XI 3.1. I do not have any idea on how to approach this. I am in desparate need of some docmentation which will take me thru all the needed steps in migrating. I currently have over 90 universe’s, and over 1200 reports( DESKI ) ( some complex reports which are built with macro’s, free hand SQl, store procedure ). All i need is a proper docuentation which will help me in digesting the needed care to be taken in migration process. I am really looking forward for an answer from u and i am counting on you boss.

    Best Regards,

  11. Hello,

If I use BO XI R2, can I import an universe (in a .biar) created in BO XI 3.1? I’m using BO XI R2 and every X months I recieve a universe to add on my BO. The people who sent me this universe is also using BO XI R2. Now they will upgrade to BO XI 3.1. Could the universe be compatible?

    Best Regards.

  13. Hi

    Is the following scenario possile.
    1) Import the R2 biar through Import wizard of R3.1.
    2) Take the export and create a new biar from R3.1
    3) Then import R3.1 whereever required on BOXIR3.1
